Are you planning to have surgery?

It is common to utilize physical therapy services before and after surgery. It has become even more common for patients to be referred to their physical therapist prior to having surgery, even for a few sessions. This can provide many different benefits to prepare you for your surgery. On one hand, this provides you with the opportunity to get to know and become comfortable with your physical therapist. The recovery after surgery can often be long, frustrating, tedious, and can leave many with a great deal of questions. You should become comfortable with the person that will be guiding you through your recovery. These pre surgical sessions provide you with the opportunity to put a plan in place for your recovery. If you do not know what your road to recovery looks like, there can often be lots of confusion. This service provides you with opportunity to put together YOUR SUCCESS PLAN! In addition, attending sessions prior to your surgery can help guide your healing process to optimize your potential for recovery after surgery. Improvements that can be seen include improving your pain, swelling, range of motion, strength, and function. This also provides an opportunity to discuss the use of assistive devices including crutches, canes, walkers, immobilizers, and other braces.

Have you recently had surgery?

After having surgery, it is very common for your surgeon to recommend physical therapy.  We understand that after surgery, you may feel uncomfortable, confused, and be unsure of what to do.  The day of surgery can be very stressful and go by very quickly.  You may meet multiple health care providers at the hospital or surgical center.  After you are sent home with your post-surgical instructions you may feel a bit uncertain of what to expect.  We are here to help and have extensive experience in working with patient that have undergone surgery for a number of orthopedic and sports-related issues.

We understand that the recovery after surgery can leave you wondering if everything will work out in the end.  It is common to be in a sling or brace and feel aches and pains.  It is common to feel that something may be wrong the second you feel a small pull or click even though you are in your cast, brace, or immobilizer.  We are here to listen and help guide you back to the activities you love!

Post surgical outcomes can be great and we can listen and help you put together a plan for success.  Post-surgical rehabilitation will usually follow progress through a few different phases: maximum protection, moderate protection, minimal protection, and the return to activities you love.  Some phases will be shorter than others and we can help guide you.  The goals after surgery include pain management, reduction of swelling, gradual and safe improvement in range of motion, progressive restoration of strength, return to normal activities of daily living, and progression towards goals that you may have in mind.  Everyone is an individual and the recovery process is different for everyone.  We are here to help you achieve your goals at your pace as quickly and safely as possible.

During your recovery, your physician will be provided with updates regarding your progress to make sure that everyone is on the same page.
